Hello All!
I've been asked a few times to start a message board for my Drifting Cowboys Website. I've declined to. because there are so many out there that have failed. I finally choose to create one, because I feel my site has other sections that may be of interest to the Drifting Cowboys and Hank Williams fans. Many of the other message boards were just that and nothing else. Also, I plan to check this often and hopefully (time permitting) to post questions & maybe have some sort of contest for Drifting Cowboy's items.
Well, let me know what you think. Please give some feedback to what you think would be of interest. I'll try to include your ideas.
Thanks and write when you can.
Nathan P. Manager-The Drifting Cowboys Website

I only recently learned of the existance of this site. I am glad to see it, and will most likely have some questions in the future. I see a couple of my friends have already written comments, and I thank you for telling me about this one. HB

Hey All,
Maybe a good way to get this thing started is to introduce ourselves. I'll start:
My name is Nathan. I started this site in 1998. I was surfing the net and found that there wasn't much out there about one of the most important bands in Country Music History, The Drifting Cowboys.
I've been a fan of Classic Country Music all my life. My favorite artists are: Hank Williams & The Drifting Cowboys, Faron Young (Capital years), Ray Price, Wilburn Brothers, Jim Reeves, Porter Wagoner, Stonewall Jackson, Hank Snow, Hank Thompson, Ernest Tubb, Webb Pierce, Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, etc.
I've been collecting Country Music music & memorbelia for most of my life. In the last few years my collecting is consentrated on vintage autographed 8x10s and personal items. I'm also currently completeing my collection of Hank Williams & Drifting Cowboys 45rpm records, especially EP picture sleeves.
Well, I've went on long enough. Please share your story if you get a moment. Thanks! NP

I have tried to reply to the suggestion that I (we) tell something about ourselves; each time , however, my post is "flagged" saying something to the effect that "...an error oc- curred....my name, etc. is in use by someone else on the board etc....." . It's quite irritating , and discouraging. HB

Well, that last one went in all right. So I'll try again to tell you folks a bit about me.
I've made 71 trips around the sun, been married to the same lady for 47 years, and have 3 children.....2 daughters and a son. Only one of them is married, the youngest daughter, and she and her husband have 2 sons.
I was born in Mississippi, and half raised in Ky, Al, and Tenn. I consider W. Tenn. to be my home. I attended H.S. there, and graduated from the Univ. of TN. in Martin, TN. in l959. I am a Korean veteran, am pretty liberal about some things, and am considered to be rather conservative about most other things. As a young man, I was a pretty good first tenor, and sang in several quartets in H.S. and college. My voice changed a bit later than most, and went from a good tenor to NOTHING. I enjoy all music, but my favorite is COUNTRY, of course, and preferably the old traditional country. I guess that's why I like Hank Wms. so much. The man was a song-writing genius. I will never understand, however, how and why he did what he did to HIMSELF!
I LIKE GUITARS!!! I own about 32 of 'em, 12 amps, and three P.A. systems. I am a frustrated musician, of course, and play (or as some of my "friends" say...TRY to play) guitar, bass, and harmonica. I also try to write songs. My favorite cousin has a CMA award in her studio for a song recorded by Sonny James back in the late 60's, and she and I have written some songs together......nothing recorded, however, except for a "demo" CD. I finally decided that , since I would never be much of a MUSICIAN, to get into the sound arena and try to at least be a part of country music. So I occasionally do small sound jobs, and play gigs occasionally. I have been a member of the band "ALMOST COUNTRY" for 12-14 years. While we have no ob- jection to PAYING gigs, we do it mostly for fun and for FREE. That way we can do it OUR way. We have a gig at a local STARBUCKS coffee house in Lenexa, Ks. on Monday nights. We have enjoyed this "freebie" for a little over 2 years now, and it's a lot of fun
I have been retired for 21 years, and I LOVE IT. I have decided that playing country music and fishing are the 2nd and 3rd best things in the world!! HB

HB, The same thing happened to me; so I'll try again. My name is Jerry, I was raised in and around Atlanta and started my vast music collection out by picking cotton for a cent and a cent and a half a pound and then sending it to Mr. Tubbs record store on Broadway and buying records with it. I have collections by about all the legends, but my Favorites are [Hank Wiliams] [Jimmie Rodgers] [Ernest Tubb] [Jimmie Davis] [Bob Wills] [George Strait] [Marty Robbins] [Pete Cassell] and [Rex Griffin]. When I got out of the Air Force in 1963, I played with a few small Country and Bluegrass bands around Atlanta and collect guitars when I can afford them. I prefer vintage ones and have a 1938 Epiphone Archtop Triumph and a 1951 Epiphone Archtop Devon. My flat tops are a D-28 Martin, Doc Watson Gallagher, and a Country Western Gibson. I also have a 000 handmade flat top by Jon Korneau. My electric is a L-5 Gibson. I use it for my [Billy Byrd Stuff] ;D. I am retired and have been happily married to my wife Ruth for 38 years and we have 1 Son; Alton, who just received his degree in Music Education from Berry College in Rome Ga. this past spring. I spend most of my time with my Guitars, music collection and corresponding with my Music Friends on the internet... I would like to add that I started on the guitar when I was about 7 and was taught the chords by Mr. [Rex Griffin] who was a friend of the family; when he worked the WSB Barndance in Atlanta during the 40s. I was priveleged to have seen [Mr. Willams] live and in concert at the old Atlanta Fairgrounds and the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium in the late 40s.. 'To Me' there will never be another Country Music Performer that will come close to [Hanks] accomplishments. And my feelings of him can be summed up in this Old Saying, that I have no idea who wrote it. " Of all the words of tounge and pen, the saddest are ' What Might Have Been' " Thank All You great Folks For Rememberin [Hank]. Jerry

Hello Joe,
Sorry the delay in responding. Last I heard Don was back at home and doing well. He was having some difficulty with motion, but was expected to recover well...with little problem playing the steel.
Anyone have updated info?

I have just noticed the question about Don Helms and thought I would bring everyone up-to-date as best as I can. I talked with a friend of mine from Georgia this past weekend who had just returned from Nashville from a visit with Don. He said that Don was improving but is not playing any music outside his home right now. He had a problem with some medication he was on but this has been corrected and he is feeling a lot better. He doesn't know when Don will start playing again and is still having some problems and I know that he doesn't want to start playing again in public until he is back to his old self. I hope this will help a lot of you who are concerned about Don. He is a real fine person and steel player. Thanks, Jimmy Porter
